Shelby is an indoor dog who enjoys going outside for short periods He is not a fan of extreme weather.. Current owner stressed how much he loves the A/C.  As it relates to water, he will not go outside if it is raining but enjoys an occasional swim if he has the opportunity.

When current owner leaves the home, Shelby is not crated and he is not destructive. He is currently an only dog with only adults in the home.

Shelby sleeps in a bed in the living room. For the most part he is not allowed in the bedroom.

Shelby is good with people and other friendly dogs and has never had any bite/aggressive episodes.

Shelby does play a bit rough with his current owner but the owner admits he instigates the rough play with what he calls “wrestling fun”. Shelby enjoys toys to an extent, but is not crazy about toys like some dogs are.

Guests may be a bit overwhelmed with Shelby’s energy when they first arrive at the door, but once Shelby has said his “Airedale Hello, sniffing inappropriately, getting attention/pets, etc. he will settle down and be calm. Current owner feels this energy could be controlled with someone willing to train him...he is smart. Overall Shelby isn’t super high energy, he likes to take frequent naps and was even described by current owner as somewhat “lazy”…but he does have bouts of higher energy depending on what’s going on.

Owner says he has never been tested with cats but feels he would not do well.

Reason for Surrender: Current owner just got married and does not have the time anymore to give Shelby the proper attention that he deserves. Current owner’s home is small and space is also an issue with his new marriage.

Shelby's Biggest Challenges:  Like many Airedales, Shelby can be stubborn and needs a strong leader. Current owner states he has always instigated wrestling play with Shelby that can turn a bit mouthy. A new adopter needs to be aware that is how he has played with his current owner. Also Shelby is very excited when current owner first comes home and takes a few minutes to settle  (TART has some tips to address this common Airedale characteristic).

Shelby's Best Features: Shelby is a beautiful dog. He always gets attention when out on walks because he is so majestic to look at. He is loving and affectionate but he also has the ability to be independent when needed. Shelby does not need constant hugs and kisses though he likes to stay near and be a part of the family. If Shelby has had enough attention  he will simply walk away. Shelby has a big, fun personality and keeps you entertained. Current owner states he is full of life and always wants to have fun.

Current owner states that Shelby’s ideal next home would be one where  an owner that is home a lot. Shelby favorite thing is  hanging with his people. Someone that is active, walking, biking, running, etc would be nice.. He loves being inside in the A/C so nice, cool lazy time iis a MUST. He wold love for Shelby to get some training so he is a better listener. Owner believes that Shelby would love to live with another friendly, dog for companionship.
