BEATRIX: • 2 yrs-old • Female • Spayed • 54lbs • 1 owner since puppy • No bite/ aggressive history • Housebroken • No cats • Crate trained • Not Microchipped (TART will pay to have that done) • Good with older kids • Good with dogs • Affectionate/Happy
Background and Reason for Surrender: Beatrix’s current owner adopted her from an Oklahoma breeder at the same time her sister adopted Beatrix’s sister littermate. Beatrix recently turned 2 years old. Current owner had no previous Airedale experience. Beatrix lives in a home where her owner and children are home with her most days and like most Airedales, she LOVES to be with her people and a part of what they are doing.
Beatrix’s current home has 4 young children. Current owner (children’s mother) home schools and is dealing with a series of physical ailments. Beatrix is a high energy Airedale who is still in mischievous, active puppy mode. Although the entire family loves Beatrix, current owner no longer feels physically able to provide Beatrix with the training and mental/physical activity she needs while also juggling the children and her ongoing health issues/limitations including an upcoming surgery.
Beatrix is an indoor dog and is fully house trained. She will go to the door and stand or bark if she needs to go outside, but generally, she is let out on breaks often enough that she doesn’t need to do that.
Beatrix is crate trained and is crated any time she is left alone in the house. She also sleeps in a crate at night.
Beatrix has furniture privileges in the house and has never damaged or chewed on furniture.
Overall, Beatrix is good in the house but needs supervision. They call her a Trash Panda because she will nose through the trash if given the opportunity. She will also counter-surf if something tempting is left unattended. Beatrix also occasionally confuses the children’s toys as “her toys” and has treated them as such to their ultimate demise. Although she sleeps in a crate, current owner believes Beatrix would be fine sleeping outside of it as long as she didn’t have access to a trash can and food wasn’t left out.
Beatrix has lived mostly as an only dog though she lives close to and interacts frequently with her littermate sister. Her current owners also rescued a stray, a male hound mix, slightly smaller than her. They got along great. He lived with them approximately 5 mos. before being rehomed.
Beatrix has no known anxiety to storms or fireworks but seems to sometimes mimic the energy of the home when the children are particularly amped up (more on this later). She also met a toddler at one point and seemed to want to get away from it.
Beatrix has not had a lot of experience with other dogs other than her littermate sister and the stray male hound mix (a little smaller than her) mentioned above. She got along with both and enjoyed having them as playmates, though she sometimes wanted to play longer and harder than either of them. When Beatrix sees other dogs on walks or at the vet, she is excited but only as though she would like to play. The foster hound rescue who lived with Beatrix for several months had resource guarding tendencies and would growl to protect his food at dinnertime. Rather than react in kind to his bad behavior, Beatrix turned it into a game and would playfully raise her rear up and joyfully, dance around him. She didn’t want his kibble, it was almost as if she was delighting in pressing his buttons because she knew it annoyed him.
Note: Beatrice is athletic and fast. Also, when Beatrice is playing with another dog, especially her sister, she is blind to the world SO...if you aren’t careful they might run right straight in to you if you are in the path of their tornado.
Beatrix has been bathed and clipped at home (it took two people) but has never been to a professional groomer. She does not like her nails being clipped. She is excited to see other dogs but overall well behaved at the vet.
Beatrix has grown up with 4 children, the youngest being 3 when she was a puppy. That being said, Beatrix still jumps and doesn’t understand her size so she has unintentionally knocked the younger children over before and accidentally scratched them. Nothing bad but something that had to be watched. Current owner believes that Beatrix would do well and would enjoy being around an older kid or kids who could handle her energy and would interact with her.
Beatrix is excited but friendly to people who visit the home. She sometimes has to be worked with to calm down. Note: Current owner indicated that Beatrix has had to stay with her MIL recently while a fence is being built at their new home. MIL has noted that when current owner and her four kids visit, Beatrix’s energy amps up as though she is responding to the high energy the kids bring in to the home. When they all leave, Beatrix is much more relaxed, settled and basically “a different dog”.
Beatrix does not dig and only one time escaped their previous home’s 6ft fence that she was able to breech by climbing up on a tall stack of firewood. She was trying to get to a loose dog to play.
Beatrix is not a good candidate for a home with cats or other non-dog pets. She has normal but active prey drive and will chase squirrels, rabbits, etc.
Beatrix has 30 minute walks about 3 or 4 times a week and is sometimes taken to an enclosed field to play fetch.
Beatrix is fine in cars and has taken car trips from North East Texas to Broken Bow, Oklahoma and Waco with no issues. She doesn’t travel frequently but mostly is just curious and looks out the window. She does not get car sick.
All Beatrix’s training has been from her current owner. She describes Beatrix as incredibly smart, easily picking up what you want her to do, but like most Airedales, does not always choose to obey. When treats are involved, her motivation is much higher.
Beatrix’s Favorite Things: Beatrix loves to play fetch and currently goes with her owner to an enclosed field to play at least a couple of times a week. She loves to be with her people. She is loving and affectionate but not overly needy. She enjoys walks and is manageable but could use more leash training. Current owner uses a prong collar to help with corrections.
Beatrix’s Least Favorite Things: Beatrix does not like being left alone and she doesn’t particularly like her nails getting clipped. Other than that, she is happy, good-natured and up for anything.
Beatrix’s Biggest Challenges: At two years old, Beatrix is still in high energy puppy mode and needs continued training and structure. She needs mental and physical activity every day. Beatrix is a sweet, smart, funny and goofy BUT, until she matures more, she needs guidance harnessing her energy and honing her ability to settle and focus in stimulating situations.
What a New Adopter will LOVE about Beatrix: “Beatrix is SUCH a happy, joyful personality” A new adopter is going to fall in love with Beatrix’s spunky personality as she is a true character. She is friendly, affectionate, and ready for any adventure. She is funny and entertaining AND incredibly cute. If you make a weird noise she cocks her head to the side in a very endearing manner.
Words Straight From Current Owner:
“Beatrix is everything you’d expect from an Airedale x2! She is sweet, affectionate, counter surfer, jumper, relentless playful energy, doesn’t know her size, has her nose in everything, very smart, stubborn, goofy, lovable and in need of the perfect home that can handle all of her! She loves kids but doesn’t know her size and can get over zealous. She could be a bit of a hazard to elderly or fragile as she is high energy. She has been trained, though it seems to depend entirely upon her mood as to whether she will listen to your commands. With food? Most of the time! But there are some things which her focus can’t seem to be broken from. When she wants something, she’s determined. She has proven to be more than I am equipped to handle, particularly as my health has gone downhill as of late and upcoming surgery. She is an airedale who wants nothing more than to run and play and have adventures all day. She is absolutely a sweetheart, no bite history whatsoever. She does play rough and isn’t good with cats. She loves dogs and will play till the cows come home. She gets mentally bored without activity. She is not for the faint of heart and needs a family who will be attentive to her. Her personality is so enthusiastic and entertaining, if you like Airedales and have experience with the craziest of them you will adore her. She does amazing in the kennel when you need her to use it. Ideally she’d do best a home where someone would always be with her during the day.
A family who is always present, is extremely active not just occasional park days, someone who loves the intensity of this breed. She needs room to run. Would be great if they had another dog to be her playmate. She would not do well with owner who had long work hours.”
Beatrix’s Ideal Next Home: Current owner believes, based on her Mother-in-law experience keeping her, that Beatrix seems to be more settled and relaxed in a home with less amped up energy than she currently has living with 4 energetic young children. Beatrix enjoys kids and does well with older children, but an active yet, overall less excitable home would probably suit her best. Beatrix needs a large yard and daily mental and physical activity with her people and/ or a canine companion. An active, Airedale experienced home would be ideal. Current owner also wanted to stress that although she does not want anyone to be surprised that Beatrix is active, she is probably not much if any more active than most Airedales her age. Current own is a first time Airedale owner, juggling 4 kids every day and extensive health issues. Someone with the time and breed experience to invest in Beatrix will have a wonderful, funny, superb new family member.
Note: Beatrix’s littermate sister does not live with young children and is overall less active/ excitable than Beatrix which may or may not be relevant to these behaviors. Just an observation.
