I'm ready for my new family!

Hi! My Name Is Cearus

I'm Available

Seriously, what's not to love about Cearus (Pronounced Sirius or Serious)! This handsome, endearing, well-behaved, eager-to-please gentleman is the perfect age for someone wanting a somewhat active Airedale but not particularly a full-throttle Airedale. If that is you, you'll want to read on.

Cearus “pronounced Sirius”    5 yrs-old     Male     Neutered     Housebroken     Microchipped (Home Again)     68 lbs     1 owner since puppy     No bite/aggression history     Some Formal Training    Not crated   • Non-destructive when left alone     Affectionate when he is in the mood, otherwise, content to be near and a part of the pack    Friendly    Smart, eager to please     Good natured    Exposure to kids but never lived w/them    Some training needed on leash    Good with Other dogs

Reason for Surrender: There are no behavioral issues driving this surrender. Cearus is only being surrendered because his current owner (CO) is not home as much as he use to be, and when he is home, his time is commandeered with extensive home renovation projects and Cearus is lonely and bored, and overall not thriving with so little attention.

Description: Cearus is a loving, loyal, easy dog who will do best in a home where he has plenty of human attention/ connection and time outdoors to explore and run. He would probably enjoy a friendly dog buddy.

Cearus’ Favorite Things to Do:  1. Run, run, run outside   2. Be involved in his people’s activities    3. Snoop around and explore the outdoors

Cearus’ Least Favorite Things to Do:  1. Have his feet messed with   2. Being cooped up for long periods inside during bad weather   3.  Cuddling when he isn’t asking for it. Cearus is VERY connected and loyal to his person/people but he isn’t particularly needy as far as always needing pets. Sometimes he is fully content just laying near his people/person.

From his surrender application:

“Cearus is such a smart dog and one of the marking aspects of his character is an eager desire to please. Training him was a breeze, but consistency and a gentle hand are necessary when teaching new skills.”

If Cearus could find a home with someone who loves dogs and is looking for that all-the-time companion dog to ride with them everywhere he would be so happy. He has the temperament that I believe he could be trained to walk without leash in almost any environment. He desires only to be with his owner.

Other Information

Cearus is completely housebroken and will put his nose on the doorknob to let you know he needs a break.

Cearus was crated as a puppy and didn’t like it. His current owner (CO) eventually quit using one. Cearus can be left alone in his current home (run of the home) without being destructive.

Cearus has had furniture privileges in the past but CO recently got a new couch and told him “no” when he tried to get on it and he hasn’t tried again. He is good about understanding he needs permission to get on furniture.

Cearus is not a big toy guy…unless it is a stuffed toy he has permission to destroy, BUT he does enjoy thinking, exploring or training activities that mentally stimulate him.

Cearus does not seem bothered by loud storms or similar noises.

Though normally calm and self-assured, like many dogs, Cearus doesn't like his feet messed with and can be a bit of a pill at the vet or groomer when getting his nails trimmed. It just scares him. Nothing terrible, he just continuously pulls his feet away. He needs reassurance in this department. Otherwise, he is very good at the vet and at the groomer.

Cearus has had NO aggressive episodes with dogs or humans. CO has never even heard him growl. He is untested with cats.

For the most-part, Cearus has been an only dog. However, a one point he lived with an Australian Cattle Dog for 4 months and they got along really well…except that the cattle dog was food reactive so they were fed separately. Cearus is always friendly to dogs he meets. He has spent time at dog parks and when he was younger, would sometimes annoy other dogs by wanting to play too much. CO believes he would enjoy living with a friendly, playful dog.

Cearus has never lived in a home with children but has a great deal of exposure to young visitors. Young family members, 2, 4 & 6 would often visit with no issues whatsoever though the adults kept a close eye on things, in particular regarding the 2 year old. At one point, Cearus stayed in a home for a week with a 4 and 8 years old and there were no issues at all.

Cearus sleeps in his own bed at night in the living room.

Cearus is bathed every two weeks and sees a groomer quarterly. He is good at the groomer except when, you guessed it, it comes to feet/nail time and he becomes a baby.

This current home is a 6 ft. wood, privacy fence. Cearus does not dig or try to breach the fence in any way.

Cearus is always happy to meet new people and make friends whether it be on walks or visitors to his home. Cearus is not extremely reactive to people coming to his house (he’ll maybe bark once) but, he does sometimes mimic their energy level, being more calm if they are calm, and being excited if the visitor’s energy is amped up.

Cearus rarely barks and that usually only happens when someone comes to the door..1 bark.

Cearus enjoys walks/hikes but currently only gets a walk about 2 times a week. CO uses a harness. Cearus pulls a bit and, if he is smelling something particularly interesting and you want to walk on, he will probably go in to “rock-stiff-body” mode until he gets all the smelling out of his system. CO stated that Cearus’ pulling isn’t extreme and could be managed by a capable teenager on up. Cearus’ leash manners will no doubt improve with more frequent walks and understanding the expectations. He is a quick learner.

Cearus is a great traveler in the car and usually just lays down or gazes out the window.

Cearus has had 6 to 8 weeks of formal training at Doggy Kindergarten. He did great, proving he was smart, eager to please and a fast learner.

Biggest Challenges for a New Adopter:  1. Keeping up with grooming?    2. Cearus can be a bother when people are eating, though not really his fault. The backstory to that is Cearus’ current owner has roommates and at some point they got in to the routine of feeding Cearus bites from the table. At his next vet visit, the vet thought he might have a thyroid issue due to the amount of weight he had gained. CO confessed to the vet about feeding him from the table and he was told to stop, which he did. Cearus’ weight returned to normal but he still holds on to the hope of all hope that the glory days of eating people food with humans will return.

What a New Adopter will LOVE about Cearus:  1. Cearus LOVES to please and spend time with you doing training and other interactive activities   2. He is good natured and always happy to be around people and other dogs  3. He is very upbeat and up for anything

Ideal Next Home

Cearus is at a nice age where he is active but not over-active. He could thrive in many home scenarios where he's given the attention he is craving.  Cearus, like most Airedales needs a secure yard and someone who will spend time with daily providing both mental and physical stimulation. He is very smart and loves thinking activities. As stated above, he would be a great companion dog to an empty-nester couple or a couple/person who works from home.

From Current Owner:

Another optimum set up would be a family with 2-3 kids from 9-18 that really love animals and like to go on adventures. Or even play adventures. Cearus loves to play but he also loves to explore and observe his surroundings.

Bonus points for people that like to hike with their dogs.”

Seriously (or Cearusly), Airedales don't get much easier than this.
