I've found my furever family!

Hi! My Name Is Chewie

We're happy to tell you that Chewie has a new furever home.
Please visit our Available Dogs Page to see the pups currently available.

(Adoption Pending) This is Chewie and all we can saw is, “Wow!”. He is an incredibly handsome sweetheart who still operates in happy, joyful puppy-mode! He is being surrendered though no fault of his own (family changes) but as a recent by-product, he’s being crated long hours during the week, more than is good for him. We’d like to find Chewie his perfect home asap.

Fast Facts About Chewie: • 1 yr (BD 05-23-22)   • Male    70 lbs   Not Neutered  (TART will pay to have this done)  • Housebroken  • Purebred  • Affectionate  • No bite or aggressive history     Crate trained  • On heart worm meds  • Pretty good on leash  • No health issues    Good with other dogs  • Good with older kids (plays rough, puppy mode)    Not tested with cats   • No Microchipped (TART will pay to have this done)

Medical History: Chewie has vet records. Records do not show heart worm information but current owner indicates he is on Trifexis (monthly). TART will pay for Chewie to have a wellness visit in addition to getting him neutered and microchipped. Current owner indicates that Chewie is in excellent health, has no medical issues and is on no other medications aside from heart worm.

Origin: Chewie’s current owner bred his AKC Airedale female with an AKC Airedale Male and kept Chewie from the litter.

Current home: Chewie lives in a home with his 8 yr-old Airedale Terrier mother and until recently, a couple and their 11 year old daughter. Due to changes in the family dynamic, no one is currently home with Chewie during the day anymore and he is being crated long hours during the week and THEN crated again at night. Chewie gets into mischief if left unattended in the home. The excessive crating is beginning to create behavior issues due to Chewie's pent-up energy. Chewie is bored and is not getting enough exercise or mental stimulation during the day.

Reason for Surrender: Chewie is described as an “excellent”/ “perfect” dog but, as stated above, is being crated long hours during the day, then crated again at night due. Current owner cannot give him the time, attention or training foundation he needs. Chewie’s current owner recognizes Chewie is bored and unhappy with the new change and his long, dull, uneventful days.

Behavior: Chewie is a typical, young, male Airedale (still very much a puppy) who loves people. He is high energy and if his exercise needs are met, he is relaxed and well-mannered. Because of his current life situation that includes way too many hours of isolated inactivity, he is extremely frustrated and his energy is pent up with nowhere to go.

• Chewie is house trained and will bark or cry in the crate if he needs a break, or go to the door if his current owner is home.

  • Chewie is not anxious around loud noises like storms or fireworks.
  • Chewie is good with all dogs as long as they are good with him. He likes to play and his level of play might be too much for some dogs…though his current owner emphasized how well he got along with small dogs. Chewie occasionally goes to the dog park and plays well with others there.
  • Chewie is pretty good on a leash and gets fairly frequent walks/jogs. Current owner will sometimes get on a bike and jog him approximately 2 miles. Chewie pulls a little on the leash during walks if he wants to smell something, but not too bad. If a dog or person approaches them on a walk, he is friendly and wants to play.
  • Chewie will chase a ball but he tears up stuffed toys so he currently has none.
  • He and his mother are fed together with no issues, but both resource guard if they get a special treat.

Chewie’s Favorite Things: 1. Going on walks  2. Getting love and attention  3. Exploring

Chewie’s Least Favorite Things: There are no activities that Chewie isn’t up for. He is good at the groomer and vets, likes water and car rides. He is fun and always ready for a new adventure.

When out in the yard, Chewie digs some but not to get out of the fence. The digging has been a bi-product of the excessive crating. He usually digs at something interesting and will stop if you tell him no.

Chewie is friendly to people who come to visit, though if his mother seems uncomfortable or reactive he might imitate her response and be protective of her.

Chewie has lived around older children. He lived with owner’s 11 yr-old daughter and was frequently around a 6 year-old niece. Chewie was good with both but he is big and unintentionally plays rough or bounces around, so he might overwhelm some.  Both children were gentle with Chewie and displayed good canine manners to him.

Adopter’s biggest challenges (according to current owner): 1. Giving Chewie the attention he needs and meeting his exercise needs   2. Providing Chewie with a training foundation

What an Adopter will really love about Chewie (according to current owner): 1. Chewie has the sweetest, most playful, joyful temperament. He is an “excellent” “perfect” dog but is not doing well because of the long hours in a crate. He is going to be fantastic in an engaging home with more love and activity.

Ideal next home: Chewie is a very young dog still in puppy mode. He is a friendly, happy, blank canvas in a lot of ways. He needs someone home with him most days to consistently give him love, activity opportunities and training, especially to guide his indoor behavior when left alone. Chewie is full of love and energy and he really needs someone or a family that can commit to  providing him with an ample yard, exercise, lots of human interaction and a possible canine buddy.  With just a bit of work and patience, Chewie is going to be AHHH-MAZING!
