BONDED PAIR TO GUNNER
Background: Scout was obtained by her current owner (CO) from a Texas breeder. She has AKC papers which CO will try to locate. CO comes from a family of Airedale people. His grandparents had their own Airedale bloodline.
A year later the family adopted Gunner from another Texas breeder. He also has AKC paperwork on his parents. Scout and Gunner are a bonded pair.
Their home consist of 2 adults, 2 eleven year-old twins, and 4 other children in past years who have since grown and moved away. There are also 3 other young dogs under 10 lbs, 2 miniature schnauzers (one white, one black) and a white and black chihuahua.
Scout was bred with Gunner twice. After the second litter something seemed to change in her in regard to 2 of the small dogs in the family. She seemed to suddenly view them as threats or prey and began being aggressive to them. (She did not change this way toward the black little dog.) CO believes the behavior is linked to her prey drive and noted that 1 of her puppy has gone one to be #1 in Oklahoma for barn hunting. CO has tried training, separating, and even had Scout spayed tried to reverse this behavior in her. Along with juggling jobs, kids, and kid activities, the current situation of keeping both sets of dogs separated all the time has gotten too much and is ending up with more crate time for all the dogs which is not ideal for any of them. Because of change in Scout, CO has made the difficult decision to rehome Scout. Although Gunner has ever had issues with the little dogs (or any other issues), because he is intensely bonded to Gunner (she is his guiding star that he faithfully follows and depends on her), he is rehoming them both as a bonded pair.
Medical: CO will send vet records on Scout and Gunner. Scout has been spayed but Gunner has never been neutered. He is not sure if they are due for vaccinations. Neither are on heart worm preventative. They are microchipped and they will try to find the company and number for our records. (Note: TART will pay for a wellness exam to include all needed vaccines, neutering, heart worm test, treatment and/or 6 months of heart worm, flea, tick preventative. Neither dog has been in any accidents or taking any meds or supplements. Both are described as very healthy.
Overall Personality: Scout is an outgoing, friendly, loving dog who LOVES attention and thinks she’s a lap dog. She is very affectionate and loves to be in the center of attention. Scout has a lot of personality and will do a “huff” sound if she disapproves of something but conversely has a radiant smile when she’s in bliss mode. SHE LOVES getting her ears rubbed and will moan in delight hoping you won’t stop! Both dogs that quirky sense of humor Airedales are known for.
She and Gunner run in the yard together patrolling the fence line, playing, and enjoying their time to explore.
Other: Scout and Gunner are house trained and use the bell method to let their owners know if they need to be let out. On occasion, Gunner will mark a spot if he smells another dog’s pee there.
All dogs in this home are crate trained and are crated both during the day while the family is at work/school, any other time they are left alone, and at night to sleep. They are now intermittently crated even more during their “free time” as a means to separate them from the 3 little dogs. During the workweek, one of the adults comes home at lunch each day and provides them all a mid day break. CO say Scout and Gunner are comfortable in their crate and will sometimes but themselves into crate time.
Neither dog is very reactive to noise or storms. Scout might whine but Gunner generally has no reaction at all.
Neither dog has been tested with cats, but based on Scout’s behavior with the littles and both dogs love of chasing squirrels and such, CO believes they would not be compatible.
Neither dog has extensive exposure to other big dogs but they seem to be friendly and have not seen any issues. They are good with his mother’s Airedales.
Neither dog has shown any type of aggression aside from Scout to the 2 of the 3 little dogs in her home.
Both dogs have had a great deal of exposure to children over the years as their family has had 6 kids (4 now grown and out of the house), and had their friends over to play constantly. The twins were 3 or 4 when they got Scout and Gunner. CO feels they both have the temperament to be in a home with any age child, though they are big and sometimes not very self-aware of that.
Neither dog is allowed on furniture and is never allowed people food from the table.
Both dogs sleep in their kennels at night.
When getting breaks in the yard, both dogs will occasionally dig, but not to get out. It is usually grub worms or something random they’ve found.
A routine day for Scout and Gunner is getting up early for a break, then crated until their afternoon break. After work, any free evening time is spent rotating the “bigs” and the “littles” outside and inside and in their crate.
Both dogs enjoy walks and are pretty good on their double leash. They will pull some but respond to corrections. They are easy enough for the 11 year olds to walk them. Currently they are getting about 1 walk a week. If they were to meet a friendly dog on a walk, they would be friendly…though Scout might initially be a bit more on guard until she got her nose on things. Meeting a person would simply be an opportunity to meet a new friend and get pets.
Neither dog is particularly reactive to visitors to the home. They will greet someone and want attention but there is usually very little jumping and they respond to correction. Neither are big barkers unless they are excited.
Both dogs are good in the car but seldom go anywhere but short trips. Gunner use to want to sit in the kids booster seat.
Both dogs have gotten their training from home. Both are food motivated and even using just a bit of their food kibble works for them. The are smart and good learners, know sit, shake, sit, and lay down.
Scout and Gunner are good at the vet’s office. They are groomed at home and both do well. Scout doesn’t love her face being clipped and Gunner doesn’t like his tail.
Dogs are free-fed Purina Chicken from Sam’s. They eat and drink out of the same bowls with no problems. There is no resource guarding. Scout really likes her “tiny-toys” and will get perturbed if someone else takes it, but there are never any fights over it, she’ll just whine.
Scout’s Favorite Things: Scout loves playing and getting love from people. She has these little tiny stuffed toys she loves to carry around carefully. Her favorite is a tiny banana. She loves to go on car rides and maybe get a pup-cup. She also loves going on walks. Both dogs like fetch but it is usually short-term BUT, if you have a soccer ball they really love to chase after that!
Scout’s Least Favorite Things: Scout is not crazy about getting her face clipped when she’s groomed. Overall, both Scout and Gunner are easy-going, good-natured, and up for anything.
Biggest Challenges for an Adopter: Scout is easy going and just wants love so there really aren’t any big challenges. Both dogs might have to get past an adjustment period. Gunner in particular likes a routine.
What an Adopter will LOVE about Scout: Scout is an absolute sweetheart who will steal your heart. She is loving, caring, nurturing and her “happy-smile” is infectious! Both of these dogs are REALLY easy to love.
Ideal Next Home: Scout and Gunner will do well in a variety of homes as long as they are together. They are both well-mannered, easy-going, loving dogs.
They would enjoy less crate time and more activity. They particularly love their time outdoors enjoying the sunshine and being able to explore and take in all the smells. Their activity is moderate and play time in the yard is mostly what they are use…though they would be over the moon to get more walks and other engaging activity.
